Top 10: Best fans in European football

Written By Unknown on Saturday 23 March 2013 | 16:03:00

Some supporters may argue that their club produces an atmosphere like no other, but bigger numbers usually means bigger noise. So, using stats from ESPN's official website, we take a look at the attendance figures of the top clubs in Europe to see who is filling out their stadiums more than others.

10. Newcastle United - St James’ Park
50,061 (95.5% of 52,387 capacity)
Having some of the most dedicated fans in England behind the club, The Magpies have endured a turbulent last few years.
Finishing fifth in the Premier League last season suggested that Newcastle were beginning to show signs of returning to the good times in the near future. However, Alan Pardew’s side have struggled this season and are currently 13th place in the Premier League.
But the Toon army are an exceptionally passionate and loyal group of supporters who pile into St James’ Park without fail, and are respected by most rival fans in England.
9. Ajax - Amsterdam Arena
50,683 (95.7% of 52,960 capacity)

As one of the three powerhouse clubs in Dutch football, Ajax is currently wrestling with rivals PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord for their 32nd Eredivisie title.
The long-term success of ‘de Amsterdammers’ has established a huge fan-base, and although it is the largest stadium in the Netherlands, the Amsterdam Arena is often filled to the brim with thousands of ardent Ajax supporters.

8. Hamburg SV - Imtech Arena
52,493 (92.0% of 57,000 capacity)
Arguably the most under-achieving side on this list, Hamburg finished 15th in the Bundesliga last season, their worst campaign in over a decade.
But Thorsten Fink’s side have picked themselves up this campaign and are pushing for a spot in European competition next season.
Their promising results have ensured a consistently full house at the Imtech Arena.

7. Arsenal - Emirates Stadium
60,077 (99.5% 60,355 capacity)
Despite their last piece of silverware coming way back in 2005, Gunners fans appear happy to pay for the infamously expensive tickets in the Premier League to see their team play.
Arsenal should be proud of their new Emirates Stadium, and the rock-solid attendance at home fixtures indicate that the supporters are too.
The London club boasts the third-biggest stadium in England behind Old Trafford and Wembley, and although they are yet to bless their new home with a trophy, Arsenal certainly have a fan-base to be proud of.

6. Schalke 04 - Veltins-Arena
61,092 (99.0% of 61,673 capacity)
The Gelsenkirchen club is having a strong season this term, and the fans of ‘Die Knappen’ are relishing the recent success of their side, providing immense support at the Veltins-Arena on a regular basis.
Finishing third behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund last season, Schalke currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga table, only six points from a guaranteed Champions League spot next term.
Like Dortmund, Jens Keller’s men are another ambitious team who look capable of competing with Bayern Munich in the coming years - a bright future that will no doubt please the Schalke faithful.

5. Bayern Munich - Allianz Arena
71,000 (99.8% of 71,137 capacity)
After lifting the Bundesliga title on 22 occasions, Bayern fans are certainly used to not just succeeding in, but also dominating German football.
Although archrivals Borussia Dortmund are becoming a German force, Jupp Heynckes’ men have been magnificent in both Europe and domestically this season.
Having earned a Champions quarterfinal spot and gained a 20-point lead atop the Bundesliga, the Bavarians vast support base continue to pack the Allianz Arena in appreciation.

4. Real Madrid - Estadio Santiago Bernabéu
72,601 (84.9% of 85,454 capacity)
Similar to Manchester United, Real Madrid remains a footballing icon. ‘Los Blancos’ are one of the most popular and successful clubs in the world, and the best players on Earth dream of playing in their beautiful all-white kit inside the Santiago Bernabéu.
The likes of David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane and Brazilian legend, Ronaldo have graced the famous pitch, the trend of big names continues with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo drawing over 70,000 spectators.
However, it appears such an incredible array of talent and history is not enough for Madrid to fill their stadium up to capacity and compete with the support numbers of the top three most supported European clubs this season.

3. Manchester United - Old Trafford
75,526 (99.6% of 75,765 capacity)
Everybody on the planet knows who Manchester United are. If you asked a person to name five football clubs, it is nearly certain that Man United would be mentioned first.
A football club that has a global stature like no other. The attendance figures at Old Trafford lie as testament to the fact that they are no ordinary club, but also a trademark of football.

2. FC Barcelona - Camp Nou
77,232 (78.1% of 98,787 capacity)
Barcelona boast the biggest stadium in Europe and the 13th largest in the entire world, and yet they fail to top the charts in terms of average attendance this season.
In addition to their enormous global popularity, one would assume that having Lionel Messi within their ranks would give the Catalan giants an unassailable edge in attendance over their European rivals.
Nonetheless, the Camp Nou is one of the most amazing places to watch arguably the best team in the world torture opponents with their beautiful yet deadly football.

1. Borussia Dortmund - Signal Iduna Park (Westfalenstadion)
80,500 (99.8% of 80,645 capacity)
It will not surprise many that Dortmund top the list. The city of Dortmund is football crazy, and Jurgen Klopp's side has evolved into one of the most dangerous clubs in Europe.
The black and yellow ocean of passionate Dortmund fans engulf the largest stadium in Germany effortlessly at every Signal Iduna Park fixture, and no other club in the world can offer such an incredible sight.
