Legendary goal-keeper Edwin van der Sar and ’99 treble-winning heroes Jaap Stam, Nicky Butt and Teddy Sheringham are the latest of Manchester United’s former players to sign up for the the Red Heart United legends match against Real Madrid on 2nd June 2013.
After a concert on the pitch from chart topping artists (names to be revealed in the coming weeks), Van der Sar, Stam, Sheringham and Butt, will join forces with former reds Dwight Yorke, Andrew Cole, Denis Irwin, Lee Sharpe, Dion Dublin and Quinton Fortune as they set out to avenge a 3-2 deficit, under the watchful eye of team manager Bryan Robson.  The game will raise funds for the Manchester United Foundation.

Edwin van der Sar, who finished his 21 year playing career by helping Manchester United to a record 19th league title, will play at Old Trafford for the first time since his retirement in 2011.  He said,  “I was lucky to enjoy an incredible career and finish on a high with Manchester United.  Of course I have missed playing football and I’m really looking forward to returning to Old Trafford.  Nothing can replicate the feeling of competing in front of a home crowd against a quality opposition like Real Madrid and to do it for charity makes it more special.  In my time at United, I visited some of the Foundation’s projects and I know the money raised from this game will really help to make a difference.”
Red Heart United will offer a full day out for the whole family and will include an opening ceremony with a concert on the pitch and special entertainment around the stadium.  In keeping with the two clubs’ origins, there will also be the chance to try your hand at some Spanish and British themed games as well as sample traditional cuisine from both nations.
All proceeds from Red Heart United will go to the Manchester United Foundation and will help to fund projects that help young people in disadvantaged areas of Greater Manchester.

To promote the event, the legends took part in a viral film called ‘The Comeback’.  Directed by The Mob Film Company, the film features Bryan Robson putting the legends through their paces as they train for the game: www.youtube.com/user/manutdfoundation
